Almost Got Talent?
Talent is everywhere, but with today's recording studio "sweetening", it has become more and more difficult to know where talent ends and technology begins.
Auto tune corrects pitch, quantizing corrects timing, and electronic harmonies make distinguishing whether an artist is actually talented, or is just a product of studio trickery. Many of the artists of the past 25-30 years, have lacked a truly undeniable talent.
Musically speaking, to be undeniably good is the best an artist can ever hope to achieve. Regardless of talent, it's a personal choice that determines what people like. Great musicians, singers, and writers aren't always the most popular, and it's the people, the listening audience, who decides what they like. However...
The music industry has become formulaic in determining what people will like. That process has caused music to become so similar in artistic style and instrumentation, it's become difficult to distinguish one artist from another.
Singers, songwriters, and musicians who are truly unique, are overlooked because they don't fit into the formula that sells.
Artists like Elvis Presley, Waylon Jennings, James Brown, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Cher, Elton John, (just to name a small fraction of the iconic personal styles that made them popular) would be ignored by today's music industry.
In all genres, the industry has more interest in pleasing stockholders, than they do the listening public.
The general public is unaware of how the music industry's dependence on technology, has eliminated the need for real talent and artistry. Technology can now create a saleable "Johnny Bravo" commodity, from people who have literally no talent, but they have the financial backing to enter the circle of industry leaders for 5 minutes of fame.
Signal processing used in modern studios can completely eliminate the need for actual musicians. It was once only the drummers being replaced by drum loops. Today, any instrument can be replaced by a programmed software file, by people who need nothing more than a computer.
As a quick example, I created this music in less than 5 minutes, without using anything but a common laptop with a QWERTY keyboard:
The instruments are real,
but the musicians are all programmed loops and sound fonts.
That's why I created
This website is about raw talent.
None of those featured on this website are using any signal processors to correct their performance.
Only sound effects commonly used prior to the 1990's, like reverb, echo, chorus and equalizers are used to enhance the production of these songs, unless otherwise stated.
All of the music on Jim Doozy's Almost Got Talent is owned by the performers/writers or is in the public domain.
"Recordings" of public domain songs can be copywritten
and "performance royalties" can be collected.
